The Lonesome West. Part of Martin McDonagh’s Leenane Trilogy ,set on the west coast of Galway, Ireland. The aim of the set design was to immerse the audience in the decaying, damp and unkempt house recently inherited by the two Colman brothers. The house feels forgotten and trapped in the past, a space that has struggled to move beyond the 1970s and into the 1990s.The design reflects this sense of stagnation, using the house as a visual representation of a community and a way of life that has been left behind. Its deterioration and dated surroundings echo the social and economic realities experienced by parts of rural Ireland during this period, creating a world that feels both neglected and unable to move forward.
